Going full double decker – Thermo King attends Busworld 2019

Busworld 2019, 18-23 October, Brussels. THE place to be for those involved in the bus and coach industries, this year celebrating its 25th edition. With an audience that for Thermo King was rich in potential:

  • 40,000+ visitors from 143 countries – representing coach operators, public transport companies, tour operators, and local authorities
  • 511 exhibitors from 37 countries – including manufacturers of coaches, components, and accessories, as well as body builders and service providers

Tackling the industry’s biggest challenges

Thermo King was present with a booth, a strong sustainability message, and a new product to excite those gathered. Our goal was to bring practical solutions to address the main challenges being discussed during the event, which included:

  • The need to address shifting mobility patterns and increasing urban populations
  • A growing emphasis on delivering more environmentally sustainable solutions
  • Embracing the ‘electric option’ to deliver passenger comfort in both the winter and summer months

Talking HVAC

As for the products we presented, visitors to the Thermo King booth found “the latest heating, ventilation, and air conditioning solutions designed for ecological passenger transport: the sophisticated Athenia heat pumps” (the organizer’s words, not ours!).

For those of you not already in the know, the Athenia MkII is a powerful addition to Thermo King’s heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) range. Available in both ‘standard’ and electric models, the unit is already providing comfort cooling and heating to over 1000 electric and hybrid buses across Europe.

Its stand out features and benefits include:

  • 26% more heating power and up to 33% more efficiency when compared to its predecessor
  • A coefficient of performance (COP) factor of 4, meaning that each kW used to heat the heat pump generates 4kWh of heat
  • Optimized control system, battery cooling and heating options

Having the last word

The Athenia heat pumps and new lightweight TDD units for double deck buses proved a big draw for those in attendance. Once again, Thermo King was able to demonstrate its continued investment in building the most innovative solutions available on the market.

As Urszula von Kreijfelt, Commercial Director of Bus Transport Solution for Europe, Middle East and Africa at Thermo King explained, “our innovations address the increasing importance of sustainable transportation in Europe and issues like rapidly increasing traffic congestion, air pollution and noise. The new units in the Athenia range show the most efficient way of achieving heating and cooling performances in hybrid and electric buses and are suitable for low and zero emissions zones.”
